General Win 95 FAQs Sportster ISDN 128k
Q: What types of connections and compression protocols does the Sportster ISDN 128K support?A: Sync PPP/ML-PPP connections negotiating TCP/IP. NetBeui, and IPX network protocols. The card also supports STAC, Ascend, and Microsoft Compression types. Please note V.120 or backward analog modem compatibility is not available!
Q: Does the Sportster ISDN 128k support Plug & Play?
A: The card does not support the Microsoft/Intel PNP specification but is software configurable. The possible IRQ's are 5, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13. The possible I/O addresses are 0x200, 0x220, 0x240, 0x260, 0x280, 0x2A0, 0x2C0, 0x2E0, 0x300, 0x320, 0x340, 0x360, 0x380, 0x3A0, 0x3C0, 0x3E0.
Q: What Windows 95 options do I need installed to properly run the US Robotics drivers?
A: Before running the setup files, please have Dial-up Networking, Dial-up Adapter, Client for Microsoft Networks, TCP/IP and any other required protocol installed on the PC from either the original Microsoft Windows 95 CD-ROM or floppy disks. Then run SETUP.EXE from disk one. Select Dial Up Networking and/or WinISDN when prompted. Follow the installation instructions until finished. Choose an appropriate I/O and IRQ that is not denoted with a "*" before the value. Input the correct switch type, directory numbers (DN's) and SPID'S when the "ISDN Wizard" loads. After copying the Sportster files, the system will ask for a reboot.
Q: How do I enable MultiLink PPP support?
A: Click on Configuration settings within the Sportster Manager and check the Runtime Option "Turbo PPP". Without, calls are limited to 56k / 64k without compression.
Q: The self call test fails. Why?
A: The Sportster manager tries to make a clear channel connection by dialing from one B channel to another and will fail if:
- The ISDN line has only one B channel or
- The ISDN line does not support 2 channels with circuit switched data (CSD) capabilities on both or
- The SPIDS and/or DN's are incorrect or
- The dialing properties for local calls are set incorrectly.
Q: I need to dial 11 digits to make a local call at 64k. How can I accomplish this?
A: Click on Configuration settings and tab over to Telephone Company, then click on Dialing Properties. Follow the center prompt - "How I dial from this Location" to make changes for local calls.
Q: I need to dial two different phone numbers for a 128K connection to the Internet. How do I set this up?
A: First, right click on any connection you created in Dial-up Networking and select Properties. Uncheck the box marked "Use country code and area code". Click OK, then double-click on the account to dial and modify the phone number field to separate both numbers with the # sign.
Q: On system boot, the Sportster fails to synchronize to the ISDN network . The Manager software startup stops on the third light and turns red. What's wrong?
A: There either is a hardware conflict with another device or the motherboard's interpretation of Plug and Play. Places to look include device drivers in AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS as well as the system BIOS. The Device Manager under "My Computer" | "Control Panel" | "System" and the "Call Logger" also might give clues.
Q: I cannot access my local LAN with my installed NIC card if the Sportster 128K drivers are loaded. Clicking on Network Neighborhood hangs. What can I do?
A: See answer to previous question. If your ethernet card is PNP (no jumpers) try disabling PNP in the system BIOS or updating the NIC card's 32bit drivers from the manufacturer.
Q: Windows NT has PPP logging functions built into RAS. How do I enable this in Windows 95?
A: Click on My Computer > Control Panel > Network and highlight Dial-Up Adapter. Click on Properties and tab over to Advanced. Changed the value for "Record a log file" from NO to YES then click OK. Reboot when asked and Windows 95 will create a PPPLOG.TXT file in the \System subdirectory under which it was installed in. Open this file within WordPad the next time a dial-up networking call is made.
Q: I would like to automate the log on process connecting to the server when my applications requires PPP services. How can I accomplish this?
A: If you installed the Microsoft Plus Pack or Internet Connection Kit, an icon labeled Internet will be created within "My Computer" | "Control Panel". Checking "Use AutoDial" and defining a default Dial-Up Networking connection will bring up the Connect prompt next time your application (Netscape etc.) is launched.
Q: I try to update the Sportster ISDN drivers to a new revision and after running SETUP.EXE I get the error "Unable to write SIBTAPI.TSP" How can I correct this?
A: The setup program either found the file in use or is write protected. First disconnect any active connection and unload the driver and run SETUP.EXE again. If the same error occurs, remove the Sportster ISDN 128K Telephony Driver under "My Computer" | "Control Panel" | "Telephony" then shutdown and restart Windows 95 in MS-DOS mode and manually delete the file located in the system subdirectory. Run SETUP.EXE again when you reboot Windows 95 to complete the update.
Q: I installed the Microsoft Dial-Up Server add-on. How do I configure this software with the Sportster ISDN 128K to allow inbound digital calls to access my Windows 95 network?
A: Currently Microsoft only supports serial-based devices (modems) for use with Dial-Up Server.
Q: I get disconnected everytime I call my server. The call logger shows "CHAP Mismatch". What is this?
A: CHAP stands for Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol which encrypts your password to the server as its sent for verification. The error indicates the User Name and/or Password you entered is incorrect or cannot be properly verified currently by the server. Re-enter your account information and try to connect again. If the error persists, contact your ISP or network administrator. The same applies for "PAP mismatch".
Q: Whenever I click Connect on a Dial-Up networking account, Windows 95 GPF's with the message "MPR.EXE caused a general protection fault in module MPR.DLL" etc. This never happened before I installed the Sportster drivers, what should I do?
A: The GPF indicates that the password list files Windows uses has become corrupted. Delete any files in the System sub-directory that end with the extension .PWL then shut-down. On reboot, Windows 95 will rebuild the file database.
Q: How do I force call negotiation from 64k to 56K?
A: First, right click over an existing Dial-Up networking account and select Properties. Underneath "Connect Using", click on Configure then change the Speed Preference field from "64k Data" to 56k Data" then click OK. Note this will also resolve problems in which long distance calls fail due to a "Network Congestion" error.
Q: I am reinstalling the Sportster ISDN 128k card into another computer. How do I completely remove the drivers on my current machine?
A: If you are running Dial-Up networking support, you may remove the drivers on of two ways:
Click on "START" | "Programs" | "U.S Robotics ISDN Utilities" | "Un-install Utility for Sportster ISDN 128K" . Follow the prompt and reboot when asked. Or Click on "My Computer" | "Control Panel" | "Add / Remove Programs" then highlight "Sportster ISDN128K" and click on "Add / Remove".

Change the "Connect using" field to change the modem type to "Sportster ISDN 128K Dial-Up" and follow these settings under Server Type:
- Type of Dial-Up Server: PPP: Win95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet. Un-check "Log on to Network" under "Advanced options"
- Highlight only TCP/IP under "Allowed network protocols"
- Click on the "TCP/IP Settings" button on the bottom
- Server assigned or specific IP address (change as per your ISP requirements)
- Server assigned or specify primary DNS & secondary DNS (required if the server does not negotiate)
- Click "OK" three times to finish.
Please make sure that the TCP/IP properties (TCP/IP | Dial-Up Adapter) under "My Computer" | "Control Panel" | "Network" are vacant as they pertain only to local networks!
Q: I need more networking information about my Dial-Up connections then Windows 95 offers. Is there any utility to diagnose PPP connections?
A: Windows 95 has a hidden IP configuration program in the Windows directory. Create a desktop shortcut with the filename WINIPCFG.EXE.
