Before you install the U.S. Robotics External Courier I-Modem, download the latest firmware. U.S. Robotics makes frequent updates and has plans to extend the capabilities of the I-Modem soon. The updates are available both on U.S. Robotics' Web site and its BBS (847/982-5092). When you download, also be sure to get the firmware installation instructions, and follow them carefully. We recommend that you use the included go.bat batch file to perform the update under DOS rather than trying to use a terminal program within Windows. During our tests this method proved more reliable and allowed us to get up and running quickly with revision 1.1.4. When you download the firmware, you should also download the latest Windows 95 drivers (mdmusrim.inf).
After connecting the I-Modem to a COM port and updating the firmware, you can configure the I-Modem for your ISDN line using the included Windows utility. From the configuration utility, open the COM port to which you connected the I-Modem. The program will notify you when it establishes communications with the I-Modem.
Enter the call type as Internet Access, choose the central office switch type from the drop-down menu, and enter the SPIDs (Service Profile Identifiers) and DNs (Directory Numbers) Pacific Bell provided. Leave the Terminal Endpoint Identifier boxes set to "00" because the program will automatically assign them to acceptable values. Click on "Save" to send the new settings to the I-Modem and reset it. You can ensure that your configuration is correct by clicking on Test after the I-Modem resets.
The next step is to define a Dial-Up Networking connection. Select Modems from Win 95's Control Panel, choose Add, and browse to the location of the utility disk or the folder where you downloaded the Windows 95 driver (mdmusrim.inf). Use the information you received from Pacific Bell Internet to define a new Dial-Up Networking connection. You also have to add one extra setting to the connection information. Click on Configure under the Dial-Up connection properties, and select the Connection tab. Click on Advanced, and make sure "Use error control" and "Hardware flow control" are checked. Under "Extra Settings" type the following connection string: "*V2=5". At the time we tested the I-Modem, it was limited to connecting on only one of the two channels under Dial-Up Networking..
