Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the ISDN line full or half duplex at 128K?

A: With both B channels up, Basic Rate ISDN is 128 Kbps full duplex. The loop technology uses Echo Cancellation with Hybrid (ECH) to give full duplex capability.

Q: Will the NetCommander work in any other operating systems (for example, Linux or OS/2)?

A: Not at this time.

Q: Does the NetCommander require a RJ11 cable or an RJ45?

A: The NetCommander has an RJ11 jack for the analog line, and a RJ45 jack for the ISDN line, but a RJ11 cable can be plugged into a RJ45 jack without an adapter.

Q: What network protocols are supported by the NetCommander?

A: TCP/IP, NetBEUI, and IPX/SPX.

Q: How do you add a new network protocol?

A: Double click on the Network icon in the Control Panel, and click the Add button. From the list of network components, select Protocol, and click the "Add" button. From the list of manufacturers, select Microsoft. Select one of following protocols from the list of network protocols: IPX/SPX compatible protocol, NetBEUI, or TCP/IP, and then click the "OK" button.

Repeat this procedure to add more protocols, or click OK when done. If you receive a message about an existing file being newer that the file being copied, select the KEEP button to keep the newer file. You will be prompted to reboot the computer after the files are copied.

Q: Does the NetCommander work under Windows NT?

A: Not at this time. Windows NT does not support Plug and Play ISA devices, so we will have a new NetCommander available that has jumpers (or some other way for NT to detect the device). This should have support for Windows 95, NT 3.51, and NT 4.0.

Q: Is the NetCommander NI-2 compliant?

A: The NetCommander is fully functional on NI-1 and NI-2 switches. We have not implemented supplemental voice services functions yet, but will offer these as a free downloadable upgrade.

Q: At what data rate are the channels added and dropped when Multilink is enabled?

A: The second channel will be added after the activity is 60% of the 64K channel capacity, and will be dropped if the activity falls below 30%. The time it takes to add or drop the channel is set by selecting the different options for Flex Channel Control in the Multilink PPP section of AutoISDN.

Q: Can the SPIDs be reversed?

A: No, the order of the SPIDs should be the same as the order given by the phone company.

Q: What do the different color bars indicate AutoISDN icon in the task bar?

A: A green bar indicates a digital connection, and a blue bar indicates an analog connection. If the bars are flashing red, this indicates an error condition.

Q: Does the NetCommander support ISDN lines with 1 SPID?

A: Yes. The configuration program can be setup with the following SPID configurations: 1 SPID, the same SPID used twice, or no SPIDs when only one SPID has been assigned to the ISDN line.

Q: Can the NetCommander receive incoming ISDN (digital) calls?

A: No, at this time Dial-Up networking can be used ONLY for outgoing data calls. You cannot use the product for incoming data calls. This is a limitation of the current implementation of Microsoft Dial-Up networking. We hope to provide this feature in future updates of the NetCommander software.

Q: What calling features does the NetCommander support?

A: There are other features, such as packet switched data, call waiting/forwarding, that we do not support yet. NetCommander will handle Voice and Data calls on either B-Channel for all North American ISDN switches. As future advanced calling services become standardized for ISDN, we will support many of them, and upgrading your NetCommander will be as easy as downloading new software from our BBS.

Q: Can the NetCommander be used to communicate with analog modems?

A: The NetCommander, as a digital device, cannot be used to connect to an analog device. You can plug an existing analog modem into the analog port of the NetCommander for communication with other analog devices.

Q: What is the difference between the OEM and Retail version?

A: The OEM version has the basic white box instead of the retail box with graphics. All other components inside the boxes are the same.

Q: The call log is getting really big--how do I get rid of it?

A: Open AutoISDN and select the Logging tab. Click the "Delete" button to remove all entries or just the selected, highlighted, entries.

Q: Will NetCommander support BACP?

A: Yes, as soon as there is other equipment to communicate with using this protocol.

Q: Does NetCommander have an "S" Interface or a "U" Interface?

A: It has a U Interface. This means the NetCommander does not require an external NT1. Devices that have S Interfaces require an external NT1.

Q: Can additional ISDN devices be attached to the NetCommander (for example, ISDN phones )?

A: No. An external NT1 is required to attach additional ISDN equipment. The NetCommander's NT1 is integrated with the board, and only one NT1 can be used.

Q: Does the computer have to be on to use analog devices connected to the NetCommander?

A: To use any features of the NetCommander, the computer must be on, and Windows 95 must be running.

Q: Will the analog devices work when the computer goes into a "sleep" mode?

A: After the computer goes into the sleep mode, you will not be able to make or receive calls through the analog port on the NetCommander. If you are on a call when the sleep mode starts, you will not be disconnected.

Q: How do you change the resources of the NetCommander?

A: Go to "Control Panel" | "System" | "Device Manager" | "Multi-function Adapters", select the resources for the "NetCommander[Parent Device]. After changing the resources, reboot.

Q: Are SPIDs always required?

A: No. If you happen to have a 5ESS Switch with Point to Point ISDN Configuration, you can check the box "No SPID required" when setting up the NetCommander.

Q: How do you know if the ISDN line is active without calling the phone company?

A: Plug in an analog phone and pick up the receiver. An ISDN line will give a hissing noise and/or a clicking sound.

Q: How do you know if Dial-Up Networking is installed?

A: The Dial-Up Networking folder can be found in two places: In the My Computer folder, or select "Start" | "Programs" | "Accessories" | "Dial-Up Networking".

Q: Is there a way to get more information on the incoming or outgoing calls?

A: Open AutoISDN and select the logging tab. Double click the icon in the first column for the call you wish more information on to bring up a call details window.

Q: Does the NetCommander support TAPI, CAPI, or/and WinISDN?

A: The NetCommander supports TAPI only at this time.

Q: What is the part number for the NetCommander?

A: OEM Version: P/N: 90100001-001 -- SKU: NETCO-IOEM. Retail Version: P/N: 90100002-001 -- SKU: NETCO-IRET.
