Third Party Internet Software Configuration

Pacific Bell Internet software is pre-configured with the settings you will need to use our e-mail, news, and DNS services. However, if you would like to use your own Internet software or if you do not meet our minimum system requirements, you may need to configure your browser with the correct settings.

The following instructions provide you the steps for manually configuring Netscape Communicator and Navigator. If you would like to configure another type of browser please use our network settings to do so. Pacific Bell Internet Services does not provide support for the manual configuration of third party software.

Configure Communicator

  1. Go to the Edit Menu.
  2. Select Preferences.

  1. Select the Navigator Category.
  2. In the Navigator Starts With field, select the Home Page button.
  3. In the Home Page area, enter http://dialup.pacbell.net in the location field.
  4. Go to the Mail & Groups category.

  1. In the Mail & Groups category, select Identity.
  2. In the Your name field, enter your first and last name.
  3. In the Email Address field, enter your UserID@pacbell.net. If you have your own domain name, this field may read UserID@your_domain_name.com.
  4. In the Reply-to address, enter your UserID@pacbell.net. If you have your own domain name this field may read UserID@your_domain_name.com.
  5. Go to Mail Server.

  1. In the Mail Server user Name field, enter your userID.
  2. In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server field, enter mail.pacbell.net. If you have your own mail server this field may be populated with its server name instead.
  3. In the Incoming mail server field, enter postoffice.pacbell.net. If you have your own mail server this field may be populated with its server name instead.
  4. In the Mail Server Type area, make sure the POP3 (messages and folders are kept locally on the hard disk) button is selected.
  5. Uncheck the Leave messageson server after retrieval box.
  6. Select Groups Server category.

  7. In the Discussion groups (news) server field, enter news.sf.sbcglobal.net or news.la.sbcglobal.net . If you have your own news server this field may be populated with its server name instead.
  1. Click OK.

Configure Navigator

  1. Go to the Options Menu.
  2. Select General Preferences.

  1. Select the Appearance tab.
  2. In the Startup area, under Browser Starts with select the Home Page Location button.
  3. Enter http://dialup.pacbell.net in the field beneath the buttons as shown in the illustration above.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Go the Options menu and select Mail and News Preferences.

  1. Select the Servers tab.
  1. In the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server field, enter mail.pacbell.net. If you have your own mail server this field may be populated with its server name instead.
  2. In the Incoming Mail (POP3) Server field, enter postoffice.pacbell.net. If you have your own mail server this field may be populated with its server name instead.
  3. In the POP3 User Name field, enter your userID.
  4. Under Message are copied from the server to the local disk, then field, select the Removed from the server radio button.
  5. In the News area, enter news.sf.sbcglobal.net or news.la.sbcglobal.net in the News (NNTP) Server field. If you have your own news server this field may be populated with its server name instead.
  6. Go to the Identity tab.

  1. In the Your Name field, enter your first and last name.
  2. In the Your E-mail field, enter your UserID@pacbell.net. If you have your own domain name this field may read userID@your_domain_name.com instead.
  3. In the Reply-to Address field, enter your UserID@pacbell.net. If you have your own domain name this field may read userID@your_domain_name.com instead.
  4. Click OK.

Other 3rd Party Software

If you are configuring 3rd party browser other than Netscape Communicator or Navigator please use the following browser settings. Note: Technical Support is available for the Pacific Bell Internet version of Netscape software only:
