Customizing Netscape Communicator to Work with Mac OS 8.5 -
Existing AccountsOur customized Netscape Communicator software was written and tested prior to the final release of Mac OS 8.5. Due to changes within Internet-related components of Mac OS 8.5, Pacific Bell Internet software will not install on systems so equipped. These instructions will guide you through configuring your Mac OS 8.5 software for use with your existing account. Thank you for choosing Pacific Bell Internet.
- Open the "Assistants" folder on your hard drive.

- Double-click on "Internet Setup Assistant".

- When the Internet Setup Assistant starts, press "Yes" to start the setup process.

- Press "Yes" once more to continue.

- Click the Right Arrow in the lower right corner of this next screen.

- Type the name "PBI" in the space at the top of the window. Select "Modem" and click the right arrow.

- From the pop-up list, choose the "modem" that is closest to your modem. If you do not know which modem to choose, contact Apple for assistance. Select the "Port" for your modem and whether it uses "Tone" or "Pulse". Do not select "Ignore dial tone". Click the right arrow.

- On this screen, type your local access number. Be sure to verify with your local telephone company that the number is a local call. Pacific Bell Internet cannot be responsible for toll charges incurred dialing into our service. Enter your user ID, followed by "@pacbell.net" (for example, jsmith@pacbell.net) in the second box, and your password in the third box. Click the right arrow.

- Select the button marked "No" and click the right arrow.

- You do not need your own IP address. Select "No" and click the right arrow.

- Choose the city closest to you in the list of DNS numbers and type it in the large box on this screen. Press "Enter" on your keyboard, and then enter the DNS number for the second closest city. In the smaller box asking for the Domain Name, type pacbell.net. Click the right arrow.

- Type in your e-mail address and your password. Click the right arrow.

- Type in your e-mail address (this is your userID@postoffice.pacbell.net) in the first box, and mail.pacbell.net in the second box. Click the right arrow.

- Type news.sf.sbcglobal.net or news.la.sbcglobal.net. Click the right arrow.

- You will not use a proxy server. Select "No" and click the right arrow.

- Click "Go Ahead" to save the settings and connect to our Pacific Bell Internet.

- Mac OS 8.5 sets Internet Explorer and Outlook Express as your default web browser and e-mail client. If you have installed Netscape from your Mac OS 8.5 CD (or other source), you may wish to change the defaults. These settings may be changed within your Internet Control Panel.
- After your modem makes the connection, double-click on the icon on your desktop labeled "Browse the Internet".

- You will be presented with the following dialog box. Click "Yes".

- Type the following URL and press "Enter" on your keyboard to get to your home page: http://www.pacbell.net/
