How to check your mail and news preferences on Netscape 4.5 or 4.6

  1. To begin checking your mail and news settings you must first open Netscape by double-clicking the

  2. Netscape Communicator icon located on your desktop.
  3. Single-click on Edit across the top of the page.
  4. Go down to Preferences and single-click on it.
  5. Single-click on the little plus + sign next to Mail & Newsgroups.
  6. Single-click on Identity.
  7. Under Your name type in your full name.
  8. Under E-mail address type in your e-mail address with Pacbell.
  9. Single-click on Mail Servers.
  10. Single-click on Edit. If Edit is not an option single-click on Add.
  11. Under Server Name type in postoffice.pacbell.net
  12. Under Server Type select POP 3 server.
  13. Under User Name type in your Pacbell e-mail address substituting a "%" for the "@".

  14. Example: username%pacbell.net
  15. If you would like Netscape to remember your mail password, left click in the white box next to Remember password.
  16. If you would like Netscape to check your mail automatically, place a check in Check for mail every, then enter the

  17. number of minutes you want Netscape to check for new messages.
  18. Single-click on the POP tab.
  19. Do not place a check in Leave messages on server.
  20. Single-click on OK.
  21. Under Outgoing mail (SMTP) server type in mail.pacbell.net
  22. Under Outgoing mail server user name type in your Pacbell email address substituting a "%" for the "@".
    Example: username%pacbell.net
  23. Leave Use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) set to Never.
  24. Leave the Local mail directory set to default.
  25. Single-click on Newsgroup Servers.
  26. Single-click on Add.
  27. Under Server type in news.sf.sbcglobal.net or news.la.sbcglobal.net
  28. Leave Port set to default.
  29. Do not place a check in Supports encrypted connections (SSL).
  30. Do not place a check in Always use name and password.
  31. Single-click on OK.
  32. Single-click on OK.
  33. Congratulations! Your mail and news settings are correct.
