How to check your connection settings on Macintosh 8.5

  1. To begin checking your connection settings, single-click on the Apple icon in top left hand corner.
  2. Go down to Control Panels.
  3. Go down to Remote Access and single-click on it.
  4. Make sure there is a dot in Registered User.
  5. Under Name type in your username with Pacbell.

  6. Note: Your username is the first part of your e-mail address.
    Example: username@pacbell.net
  7. Under Password type in your password with Pacbell.
  8. Placing a check in Save password will eliminate the need to input a password each time you attempt to connect.
  9. Under Number type in your local Pacbell dial in number. If you do not know which Pacbell number's are local to

  10. your area click here for a complete list of all Pacbell dial in numbers.
  11. Single-click on Options.
  12. If you're not there already, single-click on the Redialing tab.
  13. Turn Redial off.
  14. Single-click on the Connection tab.
  15. Nothing in here should be checked.
  16. Single-click on the Protocol tab.
  17. Under Use protocol, PPP should be selected.
  18. Place a check in Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications.
  19. Place a check in Allow error correction and compression in modem.
  20. Place a check in Use TCP header compression.
  21. Do not place a check in Connect to a command-line host.
  22. Single-click on OK.
  23. Single-click on the little square in the top left hand corner to close this window.

  24. Note: When exiting this screen, if you have made any changes, you will be prompted
    to save the new settings. Single-click on Save.
  25. Once again single-click on the Apple icon in the top left hand corner of your screen.
  26. Go down to Control Panels.
  27. Go down to TCP/IP and single-click on it.
  28. Under Connect Via, PPP should be selected.
  29. Under Configure, Using PPP server should be selected.
  30. The IP Address, Subnet mask, and Router address should all be set to <will be supplied by server>.
  31. Under Name server addr enter the two server addresses closest to your area.

  32. Click Here for a list of all Server Addresses.
  33. Under Search domains type: pacbell.net
  34. Single-click on the little square in the top left hand corner.

  35. Note: When exiting this screen, if you have made any changes, you will be prompted to save the new settings. 
    Single-click on Save.
    Congratulations! Your settings are correct.
