Error Message

Netscape is unable to locate the server dialup.pacbell.net. The server does not have a DNS entry. Check the server name in the Location (URL) and try again.

Introduction

This error message indicates that Netscape cannot find the Internet Protocol (IP) address for Pacific Bell Internet's server: dialup.pacbell.net. This message may occur for either of the following reasons:

A note about Local Area Networks: Pacific Bell Internet does not provide support for using Netscape Navigator on a LAN configuration. For assistance you will need to contact your LAN Administrator.

Verify that Netscape is configured to "dial on demand"

  1. From the Netscape Personal Edition program group launch the PBI dialer icon (a red square with a white star).
  2. Press the Properties button.
  3. Select the General tab.
  4. Dial on Demand should be selected.
  5. Automatically Start Netscape Navigator should be selected.
  6. Press OK.
  7. Close the PBI dialer window and launch the Netscape Navigator icon again.
  8. If the error message is repeated, continue to the next section of this document.

Locate and rename file conflicts

Warning! Important! This may disable other Internet or online services' software. Pacific Bell Internet does not support multiple ISP configurations.

  1. From the Main program group, launch the File Manager. Select the disk drive where Windows has been installed (usually the C drive).
  2. From the File menu, choose Search.
  3. In the box labeled Search for, type winsock.dll. In the box labeled Start from:, type the drive identified in Step 1 (e.g., C:\). Check the box labeled Search all sub directories. Press OK to begin the search.
  4. Windows will display all files with that name that are located on your computer.
  5. Select the file you wish to rename (the file located in the \PBI\Dialer folder is used by the Pacific Bell Internet software and should not be renamed).
  6. From the File menu, select Rename.
  7. In the box labeled To, type winsock.pbi
  8. Repeat steps #5 - #7 for all files listed.
  9. Repeat steps #1- #8 for any additional disk drives installed.
  10. Close all programs. Restart your computer to try your connection again.
