Introduction
This error message may appear in Windows 95 when attempting to register a new Pacific Bell Internet account.
This error may occur for either of the following reasons:
- You have a dial-up connection to another Internet Service Provider (ISP) and will need to re-configure your system's DNS information. Windows 95 Dialup Networking can support multiple ISPs, but you must configure your system to take advantage of this feature.
- You are connected to a local area network.
A note about Local Area Networks (LANs): Pacific Bell Internet does not provide support for Netscape Personal Edition on a LAN configuration. For assistance you will need to consult your LAN Administrator.
Step 1: Cancel the registration process
- If you are at the message "Netscape is unable to locate server reggie.pacbell.net", select OK.
- Quit the registration process by selecting the X button in the upper right hand corner of the Netscape window. You may see a box asking if you are sure you want to quit the registration process - select Yes.
Step 2: Configure your system's DNS
- From the Start menu, choose Settings then choose Control Panels.
- Launch the Network icon.
- In the section labeled "The following network components are installed:" select the TCP/IP item.
- Press the Properties button.
- Press the IP Address tab.
- Make sure Obtain an IP address automatically is selected.
- Press the WINS Configuration tab.
- Make sure Disable WINS Configuration is selected.
- Press the Gateway tab.
- If anything is listed under Installed Gateways, write down the number, then remove each entry by selecting it and pressing Remove.
- Press the DNS Configuration tab.
- Write down any numbers listed under DNS Server Search Order.
- Make sure Disable DNS is selected.
- Press OK twice.
- If a message appears prompting "Do you want to restart your computer now?" press Yes. If this message does not appear, restart your computer by pressing the Start button, then choose Shutdown. Make sure the Restart your computer option is checked, then press Yes.
- After Windows restarts, press the Start button and choose the Programs menu item. Choose Netscape from the list of programs. Launch the Account Setup Wizard to begin Registration.
